The Faculty of Law of Muhammadiyah University of Yogyakarta was established when the university was founded, that is, 24 rabi’ul awal 1401 H, coinciding with March 1, 1981, along with the Faculties of Economics, Engineering, and Social and Political Sciences. The teaching/learning process at that time was conducted at the building of SPG Muhammadiyah I Yogyakarta, then moved to Wirobrajan Campus, before finally moving again to the integrated campus of UMY in Jalan Lingkar Selatan, Tamantirto, Kasihan Bantul, Yogyakarta.

The development of the Faculty of Law status was initiated with the granting of REGISTERED status for the study program of Constitutional Law   through the decree of the Education and Culture Ministry RI number 0417/1985.  The Faculty awarded ADMITTED status for the Civil Law department, Criminal Law, and Constitutional Law through the decree of the Directorate General of Higher Education number 12/DIKTI/KEP/1992. The EQUALED status was gained in 1995 through the decree of the Directorate General of Higher Education number 67/DIKTI/KEP/1995, and in 1997 based on the decree of the Culture and Education Ministry of the Republic of Indonesia number 78/D/0/1997.  From the assessment results from the National Accreditation Board, the Faculty of Law of UMY with its law science study program has been accredited “GOOD”.  In 2003 the Faculty of Law earned the decree of the Directorate General of Higher Education number 06045/AK-VIIS1-036/UMYIHK/X/2003 (accredited).

In 2008, the law science study program UMY earned its “A (Very Good)” accreditation level based on the Decree of the National Accreditation Board of Higher Education number: 020/BAN-PT/Ak-XI/S1/VIII/2008 dated August 29, 2008.
