Basically, the PKBH has two main functions. Firstly, it functions to serve the community by introducing them to legal issues through legal training, legal discussions in printed and electronic media, and providing legal aid and advocacy to those who need them. In the past few years, PKBH has become a legal aid unit which has been recognized due to its contributions to the community. For example, there were several important cases tackled by the lawyers/advocates of PKBH such as the bomb case of Masjid Gede Kauman in Yogyakarta, the car bomb case of Nganjuk, the Bomb Bali case, and other important cases. With its experience in handling vital cases, the alumni of lawyers of PKBH UMY have worked in different cities such as Jakarta, Yogyakarta and Semarang. Secondly, PKBH functions as a legal clinic for the students and alumni of the Faculty of Law UMY so that they can participate in some internship programs where they will get experience by having a direct involvement with the legal cases handled by the competent lawyers of PKBH. PKBH conducts the internship programs on a regular basis. The unit runs a series of selection processes before the students join the internship programs, which means that only the best students can join the programs. Therefore, the students and alumni of the Faculty of Law UMY are introduced to legal issues and practices earlier so they are well prepared to enter the job market.
